Com'è fatto un texano: le caratteristiche che lo rendono inconfondibile - KALI SHOES®

How a cowboy boot is made: the features that make it unmistakable

Admit it, it happens every day: among the women you pass as you dash from one appointment to the next, there’s always at least one wearing a pair of western-style boots!

They’re cowboy boots: born over a century ago on North American ranches and now a classic of every woman’s wardrobe. Their features are so distinctive that you recognise them without even thinking about it.

In this article, though, we want to take a closer look: how a cowboy boot is made, which elements make it unmistakable and which ones add to it, leaving room for your own style.

The details every cowboy boot has

There are tall and short cowboy boots, plain or embroidered, in every colour imaginable and with more or less elaborate decorations. But they all share a few details that never change – the true signature of a cowboy boot.

The elements of a cowboy boot: pointed toe, lace-free shaft, angled heel, pull straps

1. The pointed toe

The classic toe shape of a cowboy boot is pointed: it narrows and rises slightly towards the tip (if the toe is round, you’re probably looking at a pair of camperos). For cowboys, it’s practical because it slides into the stirrup more easily… for you, it’s a style ally! This shape lengthens the line of the leg and makes your figure look slimmer, whatever the shaft height.

2. The angled heel

This is key to recognising a cowboy boot: the heel is always angled inwards, narrower at the base than at the top. The height can vary: among our styles, for example, you’ll find 4 cm heels for everyday comfort and 7 cm heels for those who want the same comfort with a few extra centimetres.

3. Pull straps (and a lace-free shaft)

The classic cowboy boot slips on rather than lacing up, and to pull it on there are pull straps: two tabs at the sides of the top edge to grab and tug. Born out of pure practicality, today pull straps can also become a style detail. Like on our Montana, where they’re finished with the Kali Shoes logo.

4. Decorative stitching

It’s so important that we’ve dedicated a whole article to cowboy boot embroidery and its meaning. It’s the canvas on which every cowboy boot expresses its character: from understated lines and geometric patterns (as on Nabiki) to flowers (our Dalia knows a thing or two about that!). And never missing: the stitching on the toe, known as the toe bug.

What’s the difference between camperos and cowboy boots?

Camperos and cowboy boots look alike and are often thought of as the same thing… but they’re not! Three details are all it takes to tell them apart.

  • The toe. It’s the first difference you notice. A cowboy boot has a pointed toe that narrows and rises slightly; camperos have a rounded toe, softer and more understated.
  • The heel. A cowboy boot’s heel is angled inwards, which gives it its unmistakable profile. Camperos usually have a lower, straighter heel.
  • The decoration. Camperos can have embroidery and stitching too, but they usually look more understated. Stitching that draws patterns all over the shaft is the cowboy boot’s signature.

Is the difference between camperos and cowboy boots clear now? Good, because with cowboy boots, creating memorable looks is really easy: they do half the work for you!

Why cowboy boots define your style

Today, “cowboy style” doesn’t mean dressing up as a cowgirl. You don’t need a hat, a checked shirt or a buckle belt: the boots are enough. They’re what bring the western character into a look that’s still yours, with a floaty dress, a pair of jeans, a midi skirt or an oversized coat.

The secret is contrast. The pointed toe, heel and stitching of a cowboy boot add edge to softer, more feminine pieces, while simpler pieces let the boots take centre stage. The right pair will see you through every season, summer included.
